I was able to fix it by shortening the park cable. You can do this behind the dash by taking off the hood cowl (I think that's what it's called). It has a threaded end so it can be shortened. The cam gear would not clear the cast hydraulic pump support and if that was removed it would have hit the steering box. Cam barely cleared the steering box with gear removed. If you pull the choke out it will come back to life and run OK. if you feather the choke back in, it will drive around OK in lower gear. But the 4020, 4230, etc. use large-frame starters the larger starter-solenoid can sometimes draw - or surge close to 20 amps. When hooked directly to a standard ignition switch or push-button - that gets a little worn - it can cause a problem. Using the extra relay in-between takes the load off the ignition switch. We have a 1964 John Deere 4020 diesel, the weight retainer for the governor in the injector pump broke so we ordered the part and began to disassemble the pump. (uses the RoosaMaster DB pump). During disassembly, my Dad broke the "cam locating screw" off in the housing, so we cannot continue to disassemble.#1. 4020 synchro has a dry clutch and the tranny is not particularly notorious for jumping out of fear under ANY conditions unless badly worn. To check your driver valve remove return hose to tractor and hold in a bucket. Start tractor and open supply to driver. If oil flows through driver valve in neutral the valve will have to be converted for use with the 4020 closed center system ....
